Mold inspections: what are they and how do they benefit me?

Lately a lot has been brought to the public’s attention about mold and the health effects it has on people. There are many different types of fungus that can produce varied effects on individuals depending on age, health, sensitivity, etc. Below are some brief guidelines that describe the types of molds and their health effects.

* Allergenic:
Molds that are normally not dangerous, but they can cause allergic or asthmatic symptoms such as wheezing or runny nose. These molds can be abated safely without the assistance of a professional. It is suggested that personal protection, in the form of gloves and disposable particulate-removing respirators be used, especially in those who experience allergies and/or asthma.

* Mycotoxic:
These molds can cause serious health effects in humans and animals. Health effects may range from short term irritation to immunosuppression to cancer and even death. If any toxic molds are identified, it is suggested that you seek advice from and Industrial Hygienist or other mold professional for guidance. The average home owner should not attempt the abatement of these types of mold.

* Pathogenic:
Molds that can cause serious health effects in persons with suppressed immune systems, those taking chemotherapy, HIV/AIDS or autoimmunity disorders. If any pathogenic molds are identified it is suggested you seek the advice of an Industrial Hygienist or other professionals for guidance. The abatement of these types of mold should not be attempted by the average homeowner.

The three types of mold testing available from TBK Inspections, llc. LLC:

* Swab samples: Mold samples are taken on a special swab that is sent to a laboratory for analysis.
* Air Sample: Air samples taken outdoors and indoors to determine the amount of mold contamination in the indoor air of a structure.
* Carpet sample: Carpets that are contaminated are sent to a laboratory for mold analysis to determine type of mold contamination.

Indoor air quality testing:

This test determines the type of contaminants that are in the indoor environment of a structure such as:
Asbestos; Mold; Animal byproducts; etc.
